Basilica of Our Lady of Assumption

Brno, Czech Republic

The Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady in Brno (Bazilika Nanebevzetí Panny Marie) was founded in the 10th century and serves as convent temple in the Czech Republic. Located in the basilica, the Icon of St. Thomas representing the Virgin Mary and Jesus has been at the centre of many events in the city of Brno and for the whole Moravia region during the past centuries. The icon, also called Gemma Moraviae (the Gem of Moravia), became a refuge for many Marian faithful who asked for the intercession of Our Lady and were given grace and protection in times of war, plague and distress. Although the faith and devotion for Our Lady in Brno risked to fade away in the darkest periods of the Moravian and Czech history, the protection of the miraculous icon never ceased and continues to be a symbol for the pilgrims who come today to the basilica, in search of hope and assistance in all of life circumstances.
