Shrine of the Mother of God of Bistrica

Marija Bistrica, Croatia

As Croatian National Shrine, the Shrine of the Mother of God of Bistrica is a place of pilgrimage for many faithful from all over the world. The miraculous wooden black statue of the Virgin Mary originates from the 15th century, and it is the work of an unknown local master devoted to believers who suffered heavy misfortune. Popular traditions says that the miraculous black wooden statue of the Mother of God was first venerated in a wooden chapel, the earliest shrine of Bistrica, at Vinski Vrh in the 16th century. Today’s shrine in Marija Bistrica is the place for pilgrims to ask the Virgin for healing their spiritual and physical wounds and fulfilling the wishes of those who come with confidence to Her for consolation.
